Abrams, boldly going where others have gone before (and frequently failed), successfully reboots the franchise in this action-packed tweaking of the Trek universe.

MCN Review by David Poland: My central problem with the film is also what works about it, I think, for many audiences. It is a jack of all trades and a master of none. But it is so loaded with stuff… so anxious to please an audience… so busy… that if you don’t think about it too much, it feels like a reasonably entertaining summer movie ride.

In the process of making everything old new again and opening the door for more exploration of characters many of us saw very little reason to take another look at, Abrams ably accomplishes what was surely the mission of the new Star Trek — which is less a prequel than a re-set: a re-imagining of an alternate path for the original characters that would allow for continued exploration of Kirk and crew without retreading the same paths. More>>

MCN Review: David Poland

I am not in love with this film. And I don’t hate this film. There is not enough substance to stir that much emotion about it, either way. My central problem with the film is also what works about it, I think, for many audiences. It is a jack of all trades and a master of none. More>>

MCN Review: Michael Wilmington

The latest Trek movie, called simply Star Trek, seems poised to make the biggest killing of the whole series. More than that, it strikes me as a genuinely audience-pleasing movie, one which should give a thrill to the mass audience, to the hard-core fans (Trekkies, Trekkers, Trekkums or whatever) — and even to moviegoers (there are probably a few) who couldn’t care less or think Trek is dreck and that Spock was the baby manual their parents or grandparents used.
